June 14 - Biomes Aplenty
I've begun work on biomes and zones, which you can get a peek at in this build. Keep in mind that they're not done, and are lacking in decoration or zone-specific creatures, which is next! There are currently 9 zones that can appear in your world. Swamplands are murky bogs full of poison, Badlands are a series of sandstone mesas encircling a Desert, Arctic tundra and mountains, Volcanic mountains spewing out lava, a big deep Lake, gently rolling Plains, and an unstable Crystalline landscape with mana running amok. There will also be a deep Forest, but that relies more on spawns than on terrain gen, as well as the Underworld which only appears deep underground.
I use simplex noise for much of the terrain generation, and each zone gets its own algorithm that creates the different biomes in-game. Basically for any given spot on the map I get a number between 0 and 1, and by applying different Math formulas to those numbers I can create varied terrain. It's a lot of trial and error, but with the right tweaking you can get sheer layered mesas, spikey lava-covered volcanos, and smoothly rolling plains and lakes. So get out there and take a look at what I've got so far.
