Motivation: A rival would like him out of the picture; and he feels that his past leaves him morally obligated to help

History: The child of western immigrants he idolized his father. His mother was supposedly a charlatan fortune teller, but he insists his mother was legitimate. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

History: Bernard lived on a farm with his father, near the main road leading to a nearby town. At a young age he wooed the heart of his future spouse and the two had a long relationship before they wed. He has been saving his money to try and buy his brother's freedom.
