Through the years after Richard was born, his mother became increasingly distant from his family, instead choosing to pursue power in the south. Richard's mother didn't care for him much, and the feeling was mutual. He is untrained/undisciplined, which makes him dangerous.

His mother taught him the rudiments of the Herbalist arts, while his father instructed him in etiquette, music and courtly manner. He has had some formal writing training, and achieved minor success.
