History: Born to a poor family in the city he treasured whatever gifts he got. Through the years after John was born, his father became increasingly distant from his family, instead choosing to pursue power in the east. John's father didn't care for him much, and the feeling was mutual. After a long history of fighting, John and his spouse have recently divorced.

He was regularly beaten by his father, who blamed him for driving them apart. He knows his nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone. So far, no-one knows but him.

When money was particularly tight he was walking through alleys when he overheard a Painter hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. He has since lost track of the people in his past.
