She was a general practitioner in the east for years, until she, through no fault of her own, lost a patient who had a very powerful family. Rather than risk reprisal she made her way north. She has since married many spouses, only to have them die. She claims to not be responsible.

River's mother didn't care for him much, and the feeling was mutual. He has built up a small fortune and can afford his own way.
