To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Himo. He became a plane-shifter, and is stopping over on this plane for a brief visit.

When she came of age, she applied for a position with her town's local guard, looking to work her way up via merit and eventually become a Commoner in service of a powerful lord somewhere.
