Motivation: He is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions; and he will attempt to ambush and attack anyone he thinks he can take on alone and try to knock them out with non-lethal damage. if successful, he will try to sell them to his slave-trader contact

Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He has drifted from career to career and currently works as a Unemployed.

She would practice along the way and, when she arrived, be apprenticed to a Shoemaker. She then took over the family business and is one of the better Shoemaker for hire.
