He was preparing to flee to the south, but the outbreak of war prevented him and his mother from journeying south to reunite his family. He left for the south, certain he would find work there.

Because they were valued, her mother taught her to defend herself. When her mother died while fighting gnolls, the young Tordrid began to lead the lost caravan. She has taken up leadership of the village's small militia in response to gnolls demanding more tribute than usual.
