His mother being the stubborn sort decided to stay and helped train him in quarterstaff use. He was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching him a humbling lesson in trusting others.

Motivation: Nothing but the best is good enough for him; and his name or reputation has been wronged in the past by brigands, and he desires to right it
