It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: His divine talent manifested at a young age. Aiming to upstage a rival house, his parents had him trained. He moved out east to avoid the crime he committed. Being a Farmer kept his interest for a while, but then he became depressed and bored. So he turned to a secret life of crime, taking increasingly more risks and challenges.

History: Born in the west to a Doctor, Nelkin learned a great deal about his father's area of expertise. He sought a place where he would be rewarded solely on the merits of his skills. This search led him directly into Doctor work with an outfit from a few towns over. Doctor work suited him well, and with each successful project, he earned more gold and more respect from his peers. He got away from his former life and has fallen to alcoholism.
