It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

Personality: He is extraordinarily eccentric. Further he is a bit of a stoner and is frequently out of it.

History: A powerful wizard made him what he is. A few years later when the west was not economically sound they moved to his current location. He got away from his former life and has fallen to alcoholism.

Motivation: He is not mentally stable, and does not behave rationally; and he has a rivalry with the church that dominates his actions

History: She served in the navy to pay for her family's outstanding loans. Her mother had invested heavily in several trade routes and wanted her to inherit them. When she grew older, she became a bit more civilized, usually hanging around bars and taverns. She began work as a mercenary for hire. She would embark on any mission as long as the price was right.
