It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: Born in the north to a Blacksmith, Zephan learned a great deal about his mother's area of expertise. He sought a place where he would be rewarded solely on the merits of his skills. This search led him directly into Blacksmith work with an outfit from a few towns over. History: The child of northern immigrants she idolized her father. A gifted student she started as a Performer, but she got bored and became a Bookbinder. She knows her nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone. So far, no-one knows but her.

Personality: She likes to fabricate stories about her past exploits and how crazy she is, but in actuality she is rather bland. She has the money to obtain near anything and knows that if you pay a woman enough she will sell her own mother. Money is her most trusted friend.

History: She was born on a small isolated farm. Her father took her hunting and taught her how to get in the mind of other creatures. Unlike her family, who was content to work in a sleepy main town, she wanted to work in the city. She has been working here for the past few years.
