The family never returned to the island due to the painful memories there. Laucian took refuge in the ruined castle and found the beat up bastard sword and armor he uses now. Recently a tribe of giants attacked the village and all able bodies who could hold a blade were quickly armed and sent to the walls. When money was particularly tight he was walking through alleys when he overheard a Sailor hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. He's since become an addict/alcoholic.

Motivation: His name or reputation has been wronged in the past by drow, and he desires to right it.
