It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

Motivation: He is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions; and a rival would like him out of the picture

History: He served in the navy to pay for his family's outstanding loans. He helped his father out around the business and became quite the natural. Being a Spice Merchant kept his interest for a while, but then he became depressed and bored. So he turned to a secret life of crime, taking increasingly more risks and challenges.

History: He was born the only child of a wealthy merchant. He took after his father in leading caravans. Because they were valued, his father taught him to defend himself. When his father died while fighting brigands, the young Suhnae began to lead the lost caravan. Since then, he has sought to make the best of life.

History: He was born with several neurological imbalances, which makes sleep difficult for him. It may also be what makes him so good at details. Naeris was a troubled youth. He spent his days as a hard laborer instead of attending school, and spent his evenings with numerous mobsters and gang members. Naeris decided he wanted neither the life of his mother nor that of the evil petty criminals he associated with. During his early adolescence, he took a sudden opportunity while working the docks and commandeered a vessel that was left unmanned. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.
