He was mortally wounded, saved by a kind and fast-acting Elven doctor. He spent several years traveling with his friend, before both settled down to enjoy the fruits of their adventures.

Motivation: To share knowledge with the world; and he made a deal with a demon which lead to his current lot in life, and he's becoming increasingly nervous about it
