When their plan failed the mentor lashed out against both of them and fled. As of late he has set up a hidden staging nest where he ambushes people he hires for escort.

Motivation: Doesn't want to be a Architect and was forced into it by his family; and he possesses a valuable artifact that the thieves guild wishes to steal

Under his leadership it has flourished, and using capital from his venture he effectively owns an entire region. He has built up a small fortune and can afford his own way.
