Afterwards he claimed he had encountered dire rats who tried to eat his hand. He has taken up work as a Miller and fed both sides of the war false information with the goal of increasing casualties.

Motivation: An old rival family wants him found; and balancing his hectic life and new miller responsibilities is difficult
