It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: He was born into a rich family. He struck it rich when he found rare goods in large quantities. He is searching for what he claims is his rightful reward.

History: Born in a small village he learned the ways of the warrior from his father. He graduated from the Naval Academy and went to see the world at the rank of Ensign. When his spouse passed he lost his only source of income but claims to his daughters to still be retired.
