He was working during a period of war, and as one of the natives he lived in fear of joining the others in being slaughtered. He saw the brutality and swore off his fighting aspirations, taking his younger sister on his back after seeing his parents die, and fled the country. He has taken up leadership of the village's small militia in response to dire rats demanding more tribute than usual.

Motivation: He feels the way he acts is they only way to get by in the world; and his name or reputation has been wronged in the past by dire rats, and he desires to right it

Carrie was left his mother's suit of armor and trained in its use and care. Unlike his family, who was content to work in a sleepy main town, he wanted to work in the city.
