It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: Aerdeth was born into a poor family. Growing up, he dreamt of becoming a Sorcerer, to bring honor to his family’s name. When he came of age, he applied for a position with his town's local guard, looking to work his way up via merit and eventually become a Sorcerer in service of a powerful lord somewhere. Aerdeth was born on a far eastern forest where he grew up under the tutelage of his father, an expert Brewer. He became a plane-shifter, and is stopping over on this plane for a brief visit.
