Aelar grew up in the orphanage, tormented by the older kids and famished from lack of food. To avoid death by starvation, most orphans take to a life of crime or prostitution (often both), and so did Aelar. He bought a bastard sword and has really upped his game hunting, due to his understanding of decoy and ambush.
