When money was particularly tight he was walking through alleys when he overheard a Carter hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. After a long history of fighting, Paelias and his spouse have recently divorced.

Motivation: Regain custody of his son; and doesn't want to be a carter and was forced into it by his family
