His family became saddled with debt trying to care for his infirm father. During his travels, Varis and his party rested in a cavern that was (unknown to them) infused with powerful dark magic. Upon awakening, Varis discovered the rest of his party dead, transformed into horrible, mindless undead versions of their former selves. Varis fled the cavern, stopping for breath at a small pool, and only then realizing his own horrible transformation.

History: Born in the east his family was never financially stable. He was part of a huge silver rush, which was taken over by a mining company. The company confiscated a lot of silver, but the shipment was lost. He got away from his former life and has fallen to alcoholism.

Motivation: To clean up the streets; and meet up once more with his childhood friend

Personality: He takes his job very seriously, in part because he fears he cannot get a new one. A fanatic, his devotion to his small selection of gods is unquestionable. He claims to be doing their will and will base all his actions on whether or not they would be pleasing to the gods.

History: His history is one of pain. He was disowned by both parents and raised among the slaves his parents kept. His father was supposedly a charlatan fortune teller, but he insists his father was legitimate. He has taken up leadership of the village's small militia in response to illithids demanding more tribute than usual.

Motivation: Balancing his hectic life and new Dilettante responsibilities is difficult.
