In his 17th year, his parents were killed by a orcs raid, leaving Nim alone in the world. After a stint in an orphanage, he was adopted. Days after completing his studies, news broke out that his hometown was attacked by orcs. Nim was horrified and prayed that his father was alright. However, he heard that his father had died fighting off the orcs.

To get what you want from life, you must take it. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.
