It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: He got into the Soapmaker business at a young age. His father was very strict, and drilled into him lessons on being the perfect gentleman. Some 6 years later his spouse died after the birth of his daughter. Heartbroken, Naill never married again. Instead he focused his life to raising his daughter whom he trained as his father had trained him before.

Motivation: He is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions; and he has decided he is irredeemable

Personality: He is always cheerful, even with a hangover, and is always willing to go through all sorts of trouble to help his friends. He considers everything a fun event and doesn't hold grudges. He refers to his adoptive mother for almost all things he is unsure about, which are numerous. He is very much still a child and has not developed a drive for self-dependency.

History: He was born with several neurological imbalances, which makes sleep difficult for him. It may also be what makes him so good at details. He struck it rich when he found rare goods in large quantities. He hopes to save up enough money to one day pay a cleric to cure him.
