When money was particularly tight he was walking through alleys when he overheard a Cook hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. He has achieved small success as a Cook.

Motivation: Doesn't want to be a Detective and was forced into it by his family; and find a way to reverse the transformation of his brother
