It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: The child of a Priest, who enjoyed hunting, Clerebold was taken on many hunting expeditions. He made a point of taking high paying jobs and getting most of it up front. He has became unsatisfied with his lot in life, and decided to take up adventuring.

The man easily evaded and defeated him, leaving him to live broken and terrified. He has gone from town to town working and never settling down anywhere, but has fallen for a local Sailor. He hasn't told them the truth, but wants to settle down with them.
