When their plan failed the mentor lashed out against both of them and fled. Due to his spouse's obsession with being a Baker they were divorced and he won custody of their daughter. He worked as a Cartwright, and he later adopted a second daughter.

To get what you want from life, you must take it. He remains aloof and afraid to be himself due to all the ideals others have placed upon him.
