Motivation: Someone believes him a fraud; and his name or reputation has been wronged in the past by illithids, and he desires to right it

History: His parents moved while he was still in utero so he is the first generation to be born here. Simon was born on a far northern desert where he grew up under the tutelage of his father, an expert Bowyer. He was betrayed by a partner and left for dead, teaching him a humbling lesson in trusting others.
