Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He is untrained/undisciplined, which makes him dangerous.

History: Born to a Cartwright, his mother struggled to pay the bills. His parents enrolled him in a Adept school at a young age so that he could practice his martial talents. Some 2 years later his spouse died after the birth of his daughter. Heartbroken, Gilbert never married again. Instead he focused his life to raising his daughter whom he trained as his mother had trained him before.
