When he came of age, he applied for a position with his town's local guard, looking to work his way up via merit and eventually become a Monk in service of a powerful lord somewhere. In his 13th year, his parents were killed by a giants raid, leaving Jocelyn alone in the world. After a stint in an orphanage, he was adopted. During his travels, Jocelyn and his party rested in a cavern that was (unknown to them) infused with powerful dark magic.
