His family spent the next few days looking for him, and could only assume he was dead when it came time to leave. The family never returned to the forest due to the painful memories there. Dean took refuge in the ruined castle and found the beat up ceremonial dagger and armor he uses now. He got away from his former life and has fallen to alcoholism.

His father being the stubborn sort decided to stay and helped train him in spear use. He knows his nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone.
