It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: Manfred hails from a village terrorized by illithids. While he appears to be a normal Human, he's... not quite right. Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He is searching for what he claims is his rightful reward.

Ostracized due to the arcane powers of his oldest sister, he and his siblings struck out on their own. In the process these unassuming Humans became a terror of the countryside. He has made many enemies by not giving into corruption and outing many instances of it.

History: Heir to a fortune, his parents put a great deal of effort into curing his disease. He was an apprentice working in his father's forge. He now mingles about in high society.
