It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: Born to a poor family in the city he treasured whatever gifts he got. A serious injury left his father unemployed and in need of constant care. His family became saddled with debt trying to care for his infirm father. He remains aloof and afraid to be himself due to all the ideals others have placed upon him.

Motivation: Regain custody of his daughter; and an old rival family wants him found

History: When he was but 8 years old his parents immigrated from the north. He was one of the best in his class, and was picked up by his current employer.
