It turned out to be an ancient artifact of some kind. He has done his darndest to repair it but it is currently non-functional.

History: Gilbert hails from a village terrorized by gnolls. His father was a soldier and died while he was still young. Gilbert was left his father's suit of armor and trained in its use and care. Days after completing his studies, news broke out that his hometown was attacked by gnolls. Gilbert was horrified and prayed that his mother was alright. However, he heard that his mother had died fighting off the gnolls.

History: Trained by his mother for as long as he can remember he had it drilled in his head that it was his duty to serve his country. At a young age his mother died while driving off some drow. His father being the stubborn sort decided to stay and helped train him in quarterstaff use. He got away from his former life and has fallen to alcoholism.

Personality: He tends to agree with only himself unless someone else's opinion sounds like he can profit from it. He tries to control his temper but he can't always stop himself from what he feels what must be done. He is obsessed with finding treasure.

History: Raymond lived on a farm with his mother, near the main road leading to a nearby town. When he came of age, he joined a caravan that would eventually take him to the capital. He would practice along the way and, when he arrived, be apprenticed to a Carter. He has drifted from career to career and currently works as a Carter.
