He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. He has made many enemies by not giving into corruption and outing many instances of it.

History: He was always a brilliant, if unscrupulous mind. At some point he was captured by brigands and was tortured. After several years of this he finally managed to escape. He routinely visits covens of witches but complains that many are fraudulent and lack true knowledge of magic.

Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. Lacking all sense, he decided to go on an adventure. He picked a direction and started trekking.
