History: He served in the navy to pay for his family's outstanding loans. He moved from fad to fad and when he turned 15 he discovered writing. He has became unsatisfied with his lot in life, and decided to take up adventuring.

History: He was born several months after his father was called into army service. In his 16th year, his parents were killed by a giants raid, leaving Bertram alone in the world. After a stint in an orphanage, he was adopted. He has taken up leadership of the village's small militia in response to giants demanding more tribute than usual.

Motivation: Someone believes him a fraud; and his name or reputation has been wronged in the past by giants, and he desires to right it
