He did not win them back, but he came to a realization. To get what you want from life, you must take it. History: He was born several months after his father was called into army service. Because his father participated in the massacre of their homeland, dire rats burned their ranch to the ground and forced them out. He was preparing to flee to the west, but the outbreak of war prevented him and his mother from journeying west to reunite his family. He moves from town to town, unable to find a place to settle.

Motivation: He wants revenge against dire rats; and someone believes him a fraud
