Perhaps he's slightly insane, or otherwise so mentally alien to the rest of the world that he plain doesn't fit in. He tends to his Marshal job now, and dutifully fulfills any obligations he has.

Motivation: To find somewhere to settle down; and sabotage a competitor

His father being the stubborn sort decided to stay and helped train him in greatsword use. Recently a tribe of gnolls attacked the village and all able bodies who could hold a blade were quickly armed and sent to the walls. Left-Handed fought at the side of some of the regions greatest heroes but was never overshadowed.

Motivation: His name or reputation has been wronged in the past by gnolls, and he desires to right it; and many gnolls want him driven away
