History: He was born at the edge of vast desert. He took every job he could get his hands on, but the opportunities for Gnomes in the west were limited. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

Motivation: He is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions; and he possesses a valuable artifact that the thieves guild wishes to steal
