Aside from being a slave or a gladiator, there isn't much legitimate work for Dragonborns in Nithther's homeland. Nithther decided to take the middle way and become a bodyguard. He left for the north, certain he would find work there.

Through the years after Valafar was born, his mother became increasingly distant from his family, instead choosing to pursue power in the north. Valafar's mother didn't care for him much, and the feeling was mutual. When he grew older, he became a bit more civilized, usually hanging around bars and taverns. He began work as a mercenary for hire. He would embark on any mission as long as the price was right.

Motivation: His name or reputation has been wronged in the past by dire rats, and he desires to right it; and several ex partners dislike his way of doing things and want revenge
