At a young age his mother died while driving off some brigands. His father being the stubborn sort decided to stay and helped train him in quarterstaff use. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

The man easily evaded and defeated him, leaving him to live broken and terrified. He has been a successful dealer in antiques buying low and selling high.
