He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

History: A studious child he never was much for a social life, not because he was unlikable, but because he did not seek it out. One day when Alberich was young, his father was sewing while trying to overcome the flu, when suddenly his father dropped to the ground dead.
