He knows his nephew is from a royal line that had remained secret for centuries, but promised not to tell anyone. So far, no-one knows but him.

Motivation: Someone believes him a fraud; and he made a deal with a demon which lead to his current lot in life, and he's becoming increasingly nervous about it

History: He was always a brilliant, if unscrupulous mind. Quarion was orphaned to a temple shortly after his birth.
