During his travels, Morthos and his party rested in a cavern that was (unknown to them) infused with powerful dark magic. Upon awakening, Morthos discovered the rest of his party dead, transformed into horrible, mindless undead versions of their former selves. Morthos fled the cavern, stopping for breath at a small pool, and only then realizing his own horrible transformation.

When money was particularly tight he was walking through alleys when he overheard a Spice Merchant hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. He made his way to the other competitor and parlayed his knowledge into a job. Some 3 years later his spouse died after the birth of his son. Heartbroken, Hobart never married again. Instead he focused his life to raising his son whom he trained as his father had trained him before.
