However, she heard that her father had died fighting off the dire rats.

History: He was born to loving parents in a slum to the east. Through the years after Dean was born, his mother became increasingly distant from his family, instead choosing to pursue power in the east. Dean's mother didn't care for him much, and the feeling was mutual. He was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.
