When money was particularly tight she was walking through alleys when she overheard a Knight hiring some criminals to sabotage a competitor. She made her way to the other competitor and parlayed her knowledge into a job. She was recently attacked on the road and savagely beaten by bandits.

Motivation: She has a rivalry with the Church that dominates her actions; and she is compelled to act according to her religious beliefs

Her family spent the next few days looking for her, and could only assume she was dead when it came time to leave. The family never returned to the desert due to the painful memories there. Egelina took refuge in the old dungeon and found the beat up hammer and armor she uses now. After a long history of fighting, Egelina and her spouse have recently divorced.
