Motivation: He is being blackmailed/forced/etc and this influences his actions; and he has comitted a past crime that haunts him to this day

History: Gifted from a young age, Melissa studied abroad. Her parents enrolled her in a Paladin school at a young age so that she could practice her druidic talents. She was always very intelligent and has formed a secret society of philosophers.
