Upon awakening, Hubert discovered the rest of his party dead, transformed into horrible, mindless undead versions of their former selves. He did not win them back, but he came to a realization. To get what you want from life, you must take it. He remains aloof and afraid to be himself due to all the ideals others have placed upon him.
