His family became saddled with debt trying to care for his infirm mother. He has been saving his money to try and buy his brother's freedom.

Personality: Bertram wants to be seen as a stoic, levelheaded, noble Paladin, so he tries to act the part. He does a good job, for the most part... He is a ruthless business man, a trait he acquired from his father.
